Our Destinations » Wells, The Mendips and Somerset

The City of Wells is the northern gateway to the beautiful county of Somerset. Positioned at the foot of the Mendip hills and overlooking the stunning Somerset levels this is an ideal destination for enjoying the great British countryside. The surrounding area is home to a surprising mix of activities and caters for all tastes from the laid back to the more adventurous. Wells undoubtedly benefits from the close proximity of Bath and Bristol, both less than 15 miles, but it still retains the charm and character of an out of the way country town. This "small but perfectly formed" destination is well served and will provide you and your group with the perfect break.

Wells is most famous for the magnificent Cathedral which dominates the skyline. Next to this is the Bishops Palace, home to the fresh water wells that rise up and give the city it's name (and supply the surrounding moat). The market place is another architectural hotspot with old town houses (now gift shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes), surrounding a cobbled square which hosts the twice weekly local market (selling plants, organic vegetables, jewellery, clothing and everything in between). Thanks to its well preserved centre, Wells is often used as a film location - Johnny Depp being just one of the many famous temporary residents!

Wells attracts its fair share of visitors but is rarely too busy. In fact it is easy to be fooled by the town's quiet beauty, but don't be deceived - wander through the streets in the early evening and you'll begin to notice buzzing café's, bars and restaurants. Some are tucked away down little alleys so discreet in their appearance, that you'd swear they weren't there during the day. The restaurants and bars vary from the sleek and modern to the more cosy and traditional but all rely on great food and excellent service to attract a discerning local crowd.

To the west of Wells is the town of Glastonbury. Popular with new-age types, a walk through the centre of the town is an experience not to be missed. In some of the more unusual shops you can buy books on "How to be a better Witch" and "101 Love spells", no kidding! Between Wells and Glastonbury is the Clarks outlet village which has many big name retailers all offering their products at good discounts to their normal high street prices. Going back to the witch theme, a trip to Wookey Hole is a must for all the family, the witch isn't quite as scary as she used to be, but the underground caves are truly spectacular.

The most popular activity around Wells is walking, particularly across the Mendips where the terrain and the scenery can change dramatically within a few steps. These hills are also an excellent location for the more adventurous with mountain-biking, horse-riding, climbing and caving all on offer (for the true dare devils out there, follow any of these activities with a few pints of Scrumpy down one of the Cavers' local pubs).

Other popular outdoor activities around Wells are shooting and golf, but if the great outdoors isn't on your agenda why not opt for something more relaxing. A gourmet lunch followed by an afternoon wine-tasting at a local vineyard might sound appealing (giving you a complete view from grape to glass). Or maybe a morning of shopping (including the Mulberry factory outlet), followed by a pamper session back at your cottage, could help make your perfect day.

This city is popular all year round, with families and thrill seekers alike. Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole and Glastonbury all help with entertaining any younger members of your group, whilst the Mendips provide an excellent setting for outdoor pursuits. Wells is particularly popular with those looking to relax and recharge their batteries - maybe by walking and pampering, or shopping and sightseeing, but always by enjoying great food, fine wine and the gentle hospitality of England's smallest city.
